Description

"Wheelchair Chic This book is a personal narrative with poignant anecdotes of a woman sharing how her personal need of fashion, sense of style and confidence were factors in helping her to maintain a positive attitude despite living through the trials of being a non-walker. The primary focus in this book is dealing with physical and societal challenges while attempting to live a “normal” life. The author relates her difficulties and shows how a positive “in charge” attitude can be a real asset to internalizing that positive affect. Looking her best by using make-up and clothes is discussed in relationship to body image and maximizing all her positive features. Finding a job and dealing with challenges, both physical and emotional, are addressed in an upbeat way…like making sweet lemonade out of sour lemons. "

I was fortunate to have been one of "Mrs. Mamula's kids", a former student of her third-grade classroom. I can't remember any specific outfit she wore -- although I know she always looked fabulous. I can recall with great detail her beautiful face and dazzling smile. I recall that most about her because of the incredible person she is -- positive, encouraging, and loving. This book covers a lot of topics and can be useful for many people. If you're an architect, planner, or retailer, it's good beginning insight into ideas to consider in laying out areas not just to comply with ADA guidelines but to make your facility more usable and pleasant for everyone. It has helpful tips on beauty and fashion for anyone. It has tips specifically for people in wheelchairs. Even if those topics aren't pertinent for you, it still has a universal message for everyone. It's one of the most important things Mrs. Mamula ever taught me. I don't recall her ever saying this in words, but she modeled it every day. You can be strong, beautiful, and graceful no matter what your challenge. If you're not sure how to do that, try leading with love and following up with a positive attitude.
