"The Adventures of Wally the Wheelchair" is a very well written and wonderfully illustrated story about a wheelchair who was disappointed that his maker did not make him into something exciting and important. Instead, the maker created a child's wheelchair out of Wally's components, which seemed dull and unimportant to Wally. Wally changes his mind when a father brings his young son in to see if he will like having a wheelchair, since the boy cannot walk. The boy is very excited and loves the wheelchair, because it allows him to be more independent, and Wally learns that one doesn't have to be big, flashy or fast to be very important. The story contains a serious message on multiple levels, although it is written in an engaging and entertaining style. As with all children's picture books that appeal to me, this one is written so an adult can easily interact with a child while reading the story. The illustrations are entertaining, fit the story well, and capture the emotions of the characters. This is a book that will appeal to young ones, as well as to their adult readers. It will wear well over repeated readings, too, for those young ones who like to hear their favourite stories over and over again. I definitely recommend this book.
